Sunny Fresh Foods core purpose is to be the supplier of choice to our customers worldwide. Sunny Fresh Foods stakeholders produce value added egg products utilizing liquid egg in either whole, white or yolk form. We carry a full line of liquid egg products. The Sunny Fresh Foods, Mason City, IA facility is a brand new facility utilizing the newest in technology in our refrigeration system and processes. This facility is scheduled to start production on December 1, 2000. Refrigeration equipment is being tested by the contractor using IIAR guidelines for safe operation of ammonia refrigeration systems. All operators, as they are hired, will take part in refrigeration and emergency response classes. These programs will be transferred as a "best practice" from other Sunny Fresh facilities. We utilize ammonia in our refrigeration system to control temperatures of our manufacturing process. This ensures that our products are processed and maintained at proper temperatures inhibiting microbiological growth. Ammonia is one of the most widely used refrigerants in the food industry and is the most effective and environmentally safe che micals for keeping food at its proper temperature. It is a colorless gas with a strong pungent odor. The refrigeration system at Sunny Fresh Foods controls the temperature of product in holding tanks, pasteurizing, cooler and blast freezer warehouse, and production rooms. Sunny Fresh Foods has calculated a worst case scenario involving a failure of our high pressure receiver causing 6240 pounds of ammonia to be released over 10 minutes. This would have a predicted impact of nine tenths of a mile and potentially affect 1149 people and businesses around the Sunny Fresh Foods, Mason City plant. An alternative scenario would be a failur of a pressure relief valve resulting in a release of 18,000 pounds over 10 minutes. This would have a predicted impact of three tenths of a mile and potentially affect people and businesses surrounding the plant. These calculations were derived from the EPA's "Risk Management Program Guidance for Ammonia Refrigeration". If a release should occur, Sunny Fresh Foods will work in conjunction with local Emergency Response Hazmat Team to handle the release. The local fire department is involved with our Mason City facility. On site responders will be trained as they are hired and drills will be conducted as the team is formed.
